Yikes -- yes, we hit that when returning in May, although since it was mid-day on a Monday heading south, the back-up wasn't too bad. But, yes, I would avoid it at all cost -- the time saved vs. going straight out Mass Pike to 495 isn't all that much anyway.

When heading south on 495, I usually make a last-second decision whether or not to do the 290 cut-off -- if there's a ton of traffic backed up at 495-290 exit, blow it off and head down to 495/Mass Pike.
