They got rid of their tollbooths because they did not have toll plazas. The booths were plunked down across the travel lanes (on the roads that I remember using) and a series of fatal accidents caused them to reconsider.

With transponder and open road tolling technology, the installation costs would be fairly low. Face it, roads and bridges have to be paid for somehow. I bet the CT fuel taxes stay high though.
