I have a friend in NJ who actually used garbage pickup as an argument for his absurd taxes:

I can pay someone $25/wk to pick up garbage.
He gets to pay 8% state income tax and 7% sales tax, as well as a more expensive, smaller house with a higher property tax bill.

Enjoy your “free” garbage pickup.
He is paying at least $25k per year to the state in income tax alone. Mass is just like this.

Massachusetts income tax rate on wages, dividends, and capital gains is 5%. If your friend is paying $25,000 per year in a state that is "just like this' they are doing OK.

That tax amount would come from an income of $500,000 annually.
