AT&T 3G service for the iPhone is virtually non-existent north of NH/MA border. At the AT&T store in Rockingham Mall, the reps said very true.
However, a gentleman working at the Apple Store lives in Manchester, and reported 3G serice is stronger and on/off aroiund the area. I've had visitors with iPhone and they are very frustrated - dropped calls, \etc.

I've been watching the rumor forums as my Verizon contract as a few months remaining and I'd like an iPhone. I've been with VZW for over dozen years; I agree and have had few issues. The cell tower is right south from Meredith, on the mountain.

Changes are coming among all the providers and the hardware, starting summer to end of year. Sorry to be of little help for immediate plans.
