If you are walking... carry a big stick... this is used to poke the slush, snow, etc in front of you before you step. You never know what lies ahead. If you fall in, the stick can be used across the hole onto the ice to give something to hold onto. Also do not walk to close to the people you are with. I am pretty sure the ice is solid... but one never knows where there will be a weak spot. The sleet covering can mask a lot of trecherous ice.
