If your battery has wingnuts, replace them with hex nuts, even if you can get the engine going. Wingnuts are a bad idea on a marine battery; great "handle" though...

If the starter is indeed bad, look into having it repaired rather than replaced. I have found that a starter/alternator rebuild shop will repair them for substantially less than the cost of a new one. I have used a shop in Hampstead NH with excellent results.
