Same thing with retail.
I can buy dress socks at Walmart as a customer, or dress socks at Brook's Brothers as a guest.

The experience and expectations are simply different.
Hotels and some restaurants call their customers guests, but No, it isn't the same with retail. Seriously high-end stores may call their regular customers “clients.” I don't know how you got the idea that Brooks Brothers will call you a guest if you buy their dress socks or anything else. Brooks Brothers website:

“CUSTOMER CARE”

“The height of convenience: The gold standard of customer service, in one of our numerous convenient locations.”

“Impeccable design details and inspiration from Creative Director Michael Bastian. Unparalleled customer service. The paragon of fit.”

“Brooks Brothers Rewards is a Brooks Brothers customer loyalty program featuring rewards and exclusive member-only benefits designed to recognize and reward members for shopping at Brooks Brothers stores (excluding Airport stores).”
