The total you pay consists of a registration fee and a tax. If you register through an agent (Marina, Town Clerk) that town gets the tax. The money mostly goes to the "Navigation Safety Fund" for Marine Patrol, not the state general fund There are also designations for lake protection e.g. milfoil control and some to Fish and Game for their Search and Rescue units. Love this one: because the NH constitution says the state cannot force towns to do anything unless the state funds the expense, there is $1.00 that goes to the Town Clerk/Tax Collector to cover the mandated activity. A tax to collect a tax. This used to be all printed on the back f the old style registration forms
