The barn was built in 1890 and was the site of Goldthwaite Manor, which offered both lodging and dining from 1935 to 1953. It was then operated as the Bittersweet Restaurant from 1954 to 2005, and in 2008 it was operated for one year as The Barn Door Tavern & Grill. It has been vacant for at least six years. James Marchese purchased the property and decided to restore the barn to its original state (rather than reopen it as a restaurant) and to convert an addition to the building as a residence.
