Only place I've been on the Cape/islands is Nantucket. First experience was gigging with a band there. After that, went with various girlfriends to visit and do long weekend type mini-vacations. Nice place with a whaling history, shopping in the "quaint" downtown area, renting a Jeep to drive out on the dunes (best time)
Renting scooters to see the island. Restaurants are plentiful as well. Beaches galore!
Not sure if they "shut down" in winter to some degree because my experiences were in summer/fall.
Just saw you're going in July...lots of fun there then!
Some say it's more commercial but to me that just means less boring...
