Our home sat empty for years on the market before we purchased it. The water had a very slight smell/stink to it at times.
Water tests were done and all was "normal".
The well company did a "shock chlorination" of the well.
For two days, the water was brown. We ran the garden hose outside to flush out the system. After the second day, the waster was crystal clear and the smell was gone. That was several years ago.
