Yes I second MDoug's "thanks" lots of good information and first hand experience here. Nice to hear the odor and smoke issue "should" be greatly reduced with a stove or insert. I do not believe the house is to tight actually just the oposite if anything, we're always complaining it's always freezing.
Chimney certainly needs cleaning it's been awhile that I know of.
