Today I did some research at the airport where I got my PPL. (KUUU) Newport, RI.

NOW: The plane rental is $65 per hour. The plane is a Clunky 1970 Piper Cherokee 140. 100LL Fuel NOT included. Fuel cost ..$6.35 per gallon. That plane probably burns 8 GPH. The flight instructor is $117/hour. Results may vary. ....NB
Got my Private in 1970 in a Cessna 150. Commercial in a Cherokee 140 and Instrument rating in a Cherokee 180. I don't recall for certain, but I think the 150 was $30 to $35 per hour WITH the flight instructor. I was working for the FAA at the time. Shortly after getting my ratings, I joined the FAA flying club, Cessna 182, full IFR...paid $10/hr WET including reserve for engine overhaul. Times have changed a bit since then.
