It's not a bad idea to take a look under the engine cover prior to heading out regardless. Check the oil, look at what's floating in the bilge, look for anything unusual. I have never found anything different in a positive way, like a lost $20 for example, but I have noticed things that have kept me from having a bad day on the Lake. Only few things can cause a bad day on the Lake, and (to me anyway) a boat can be the fastest way to one.
