Default I too lift the engine cover...

I like to open the cover and stick my head down into the compartment and take a couple of good sniffs...I too have often wondered what would happen if there was a problem with the blower and a spark occurred.

I leave the cover open while I start the engine...if anything happens, at least the blast has an easy way to get out of the compartment, ie the path of least resistance.
