They use the post and wire type up in the notch because of snow. Not for the patina. Standard metal guardrails act as snow fences and the wire ones let the snow blow through. The wire type do not hold up to plowing as well so they are replacing them with the standard W beam type, thus replacing the many rotted wood post that most likely would not stop something like a pickup truck from going down an embankment.
