Keep your fuel runs as short as possible. 8' should be no problem for a healthy, stock fuel pump.

I am not sure the primer bulb "cares" which way it is orientated.

I don't understand why you didn't just buy the new hose (single hose type?), and cut the gas tank connector off (you are going to shorten it anyways), and just use a 6-Gallon Gerry can and put the loose hose into the bottom of the Gerry can for testing purposes.?

Check what's inside your filters. Fuel line deterioration is a real threat with the new gas. Junk in the filters means junk in carbs.
