I'm not terribly experienced with old outboards, but if you went a period of time when you ran the engine, but never at a high speed, your main fuel jet may be clogged. Either that or you can't supply enough fuel during peak demand (kink in fuel line, clogged fuel filter, etc).

OP maybe we can talk you through it. What are your "symptoms?"
