Another thing that the PS Inspector, Tom, noted was that in many cases the positive battery post (s) were not protected. It seems that most of the boat manufacturers use the little plastic terminal covers fall off as they are not well suited to the bouncing a boat does.

I have my batteries in boxes which Tom prefers. Note that this was only a recommendation not a requirement but the concern is a short to ground from something else (light poles, tools, etc) jostling around while underway.
