Warning Description: Special Weather Statement Warning Date: 10:47 am EDT on May 30, 2010 WarningSum:...Smoke From Fires In Quebec Causing Concern Across Maine And New Hampshire... Warning Message:Large fires located approximately 350 miles north and west of Portland Maine in southern Quebec are generating large amounts of smoke. Strong northwest winds are bringing the smoke south and east over norther New England this morning. Smoke is reducing visibility to around 3 miles in places and the smell of smoke is very strong and distinct across the region. Northwest winds will continue throughout today and tonight. Tomorrow afternoon winds are expected to shift to the southwest...which should bring an end to the smokey conditions. Persons with respiratory problems should limit their outdoor activities and take precautions or remain indoors. Warning Message:The National Weather Service in gray has issued a red flag warning...which is in effect until 9 PM EDT this evening. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect. Hot and dry conditions today will combine with gusty winds to produce dangerous fire weather conditions. As temperatures rise into the 70s and lower 80s today...relative humidity values will fall to around 25 percent. This will combine with northwest winds gusting to around 30 mph to create dangerous fire weather conditions. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now...or will shortly. A combination of strong winds...low relative humidity...and warm temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential.
