Need advice on prop size.
 

Took my boat out of storage and to my surprise my prop was stolen. I'm looking for opinions on size. I had a mercury mirage stainless prop but not sure on the pitch maybe 23"? Any ideas out there? It's 237 powerquest with a 454 carb 300 horse power.

Sounds about right for a 300 HP motor. I think that is standard for the 454.
I have a 454 in an F-223 LS. I have a SS Bravo 23" and a SS Bravo 25" available. I am currently happy with a SS Bravo 4 blade.

If interested, I will let you try props and I will give you the option to buy.

All 454s after 1987 have Bravo drives. Yes they fit a Bravo I with standard rotation.;)

Powerquest should be able to tell you what prop was originally installed....

If not, most marinas will lakeport/irwins etc have spare props you can try out with a deposit... the 23 Mirage sounds about right but the best way is to test...

I would bet the 23 is right... The 25 may be too aggressive of a pitch. I have a 500HP running a 24 (4 blade) I can't imagine you needing more then a 23.

What I find on the Formula
 

I bought the Formula with a Michigan SS 21" 3 blade. The motor was on the rev limiter at full throttle. I was able to swap for a 23" Bravo 3 blade. I hit the rev limiter with light loads in the boat. I bought a 25" 3 blade and the boat tend to blow out the prop. It did not hit the rev limiter when it is running right. Later I bought a 24" 4 blade and I am happy. No blowouts even in hard turns. Vibration is a lot less and great holeshots. I was able to save another gallon per hour.

Can't find on the INTERNET the difference between Bravo and Mirage props. Someone says the Mirage is a cupped Bravo. My Bravos appeared to be cupped. My Bravo 4 blade appears to be cupped as well. When I get a chance I will attached pictures of the props.

Careful with your 4 blade. It may give you the best overall performance however it may provide too much grip and not enough slip. You may end up blowing your drive faster.

Just a heads up.

I work in the parts department at Irwin Marine and can tell you exactly which prop the boat was delivered with. A 237 Stryker with a 7.4L Bravo One would have had a 14 3/4"X21P Mirage propeller. I happen to have one here I would be inclined to give you a "deal" on. The Mercury part number is 48-13702A46, let me know if I can be of assistance.

Well you never know. I hope they have a reciept for it or explanation on how and when they recieved it. Be assured that I WILL be able to tell if it was mine.

Well I guess that's my reward for being "helpful". The prop is actually a Mirage Plus, Mercury part number 48-13705A56. The only difference being that the Plus has the Mercury Prop Ventilation System. It is a new prop that has been installed but never sold nor repaired. As mentioned previously, it not unusual to allow customers to try props before buying, especially stainless steel props. Retail price on this prop is $631.67 and could let this one go for $500. I work at the Irwin's in Lakeport and will be glad to assist you at the counter, we are open 7 days a week til 5:00.

chillin, I think your first number is probably the correct one. Doesn't merc use odd numbers in the 5th position to designate LH props?

$500 for a SS prop that is essentially brand new from a Dealer is a pretty good deal! If you want a cheaper used prop I suggest you try Offshore Only or Scream & Fly... but buyer beware!

Mercury Mirage 3 blade props come in an odd pitch 21, 23, 25, 27, 29 etc while the 4 blade Bravo props come in even pitch 22, 24, 26, 28, 30 etc... I run a labbed 26P 4 blade on my Donzi 26Zx...

$500.00 for what is essentially a new prop from a dealer with a warranty and the chance to demo it (I assume) sounds fair. Why is it that people look for service and help and after you have provided it they want a price that doesn't allow you enough profit to keep the doors open?

We have a sign in our shop (specialty electronics) "QUALITY, SERVICE, PRICE, PICK ANY 2" We don't have to be the cheapest vendor in the world because we ADD VALUE to everything we sell. Our customers recognize that comes with a price.

Seems like $500 for a new prop is great. Considering the MSRP is more like $600. I have been dabbling in EBay for props and $500 for 'virgin' props is average. Used SS props can go anywhere from $50 to $350 depending on shape, make, and rarity.

I dug out the props and I goof. The 3 blades are Mirage. I will sell for $300 or best reasonable offer. They are both used and have minute nicks and dings. The 23" has a rubber hub and the 25" is a solid hub. Both fit a Bravo I drive.

The 4 blade is a Revolution 4. Looks more like a cleaver with less rake than a Bravo 4. There are aeration plugs at the base. You can take them out and the exhaust will aerate the blades if you need less bite at lower speed.

Thanks for the input from everyone. It seems people get rattled a bit here on this sight one of the reasons I don't post. But the help and advice from everyone is taken into consideration. As far as price goes it sounds like a great price to some but I was told it had been used. USED is USED like new isn't new. The market is flooded with these props best price wins.
