More on Spindle Point

Just read the posts that a fellow reader suggested about the lighthouse on Spindle Point. (June '08). The part about Col. Cummings Iwas told is fact. As a young man I was able to climb to the top of the lighthouse as it was of sound structure back then. The property was owned by a family named Nickerson then. The part that comes into question (for me ),is I was told the lighthouse was built by a real estate developer as an ad for selling the related properties. Not by Col. Cummings. This I do not know for sure, again, it was what I heard as a young man. If anyone can still shed some light on the Spindle Point Civic Assoc. I would love to hear about it!

Spindle Point features the only lighthouse on Lake Winnipesaukee. It is rumored that the costume designer for the “Wizard of Oz” designed the witch's hat after seeing this conical stone lighthouse during a visit to Meredith.

The light house was built in 1892 by Colonel Charles Cummings for his daughter as an art studio. The lighthouse is a stone and wood structure which stand 40 feet above the lake.

Oh Mcdude, you've done it again.I happened to be watching the Wiz this weekend and thought the castle might have been modeled after the Castle in the Clouds.Always made me wonder that the witch could not fly in rainy weather or go water skiing on Winni cuz she would melt!

Here are some up-close and interior photos of the "lighthouse". The name Chas. H. Cummings is engraved right into the rock so I'm thinking that, indeed, the lighthouse was built by him.

For Sale?

Wasn't Spindle Point for sale not so long ago? I remember seeing the listing on the web. It had interior shots. Wasn't a great place to actually live, but there was a house that went with the tower. Can't seem to find the listing again so it was either sold or taken off the market.

You remember correctly, it was for sale a few years ago. Here's the thread from July 2005:
Spindle Point for sale
. Some history and background of the property also in that thread. Some of the links in the old thread no longer work - like the real estate listing.
The Concord Monitor story on the proposed sale is still on their web site and has info and history of the people and the property.

sidenote to nj2nh: Your screen name is in the format of a FCC issued Amateur (HAM) Radio call sign. I still look at your name and think HAM before I think you are from NJ going to NH :)

You are correct that The Spindle Point Light House property was for sale. It sold on 31 March 08 for $775,000.

Spindle Point from the air

I love the lighthouse! In fact, I used this image for the month of May on our 2009 calendar.

No ham radio for me. I shamelessly stole that screen name from the license plate of a car I saw once in Wolfeboro many years ago and then again, remarkably, on a highway here in Jersey.
