Eagles are growing
 

The eagle's nest was on Poplar Island across from Camp Tecumseh. The nest blew down in the storm about a month ago. There were originally 3 eaglets, but one of them (we called him Rocky) was in the nest when it was blown, and he ended up on the ground, evidently rather traumatized. We last saw Rocky about 3 weeks ago, hopping about on the rocks and the ground when one of the parents brought fish to feed the youngsters. We have only seen 2 of the eaglets recently... although they all look alike... it's hard to tell. Last Friday we were anchored off Poplar, swimming in the lake, and the 2 eaglets (which are adult sized now, but brown) flew directly over us toward Wolfeboro. Then last Sunday we anchored and one of the eaglets who had captured a good sized bass, flew up into the trees about 30 yards from us. I have binoculars with a gyroscope in them (bird watcher)... so once you get the image you want you can lock it in place ... we watched the eaglet dine on the bass for about 40 minutes. We were close enough to see the red band on the right leg and the silvery band on the left left of the bird. The eaglets still stay on Poplar, although the nest is gone. They are kinda hard to see because they really blend into their background, but you can hear them calling out to each other and their parents, and once you hear them you can try to focus in on where they are. It's truly an amazing experience, they are so elegant.

I was out on my Seadoo this morning and went by Poplar Island. All 3 eaglets were high in the tree they call home. They screech a lot. There is a sheet of metal attached around the base of the tree to keep predators from climbing it. Not far away, on Loon Island, sat mom or dad. Very large bird and majestic as he/she took flight.

The long time nesting bald eagles on the coast of Maine (see http://www.briloon.org/watching-wildlife/eagle-cam.php) have been unsuccessful in nesting the past 2 years so it's been a treat to see the pair on Winnipesaukee.

I might've seen one of the parents a few weeks ago. My son and I were out canoeing/fishing and went over to the north side of Black Island. An adult baldie flew directly overhead and perched itself atop a tall pine on the shoreline. So we paddled over and watched. I took a couple of videos with my "angler's de-liar" (aka Flip Video recorder).
