Anybody have an extra $3 million they could spare??
Many NH residents not claiming one-time tax refund
PORTSMOUTH (AP) - The IRS says it looks like many New Hampshire residents are overlooking a chance to boost their tax refunds this year. New Hampshire has the third-lowest percentage in the nation of taxpayers including a federal telephone excise tax refund. The refund is worth $30-$60. The IRS says nearly 99,000 returns filed in New Hampshire did not claim the telephone refund, meaning about $3 million in refunds was not credited. The government stopped collecting the tax last year after several courts ruled the tax was being applied incorrectly. -Worm |

This made up a large percentage of my $98 return this year. Woo-hoo!!
And then I applied that to my $370 March oil bill. Double woo-hoo!! Rolling in the dough, going up-town with all these tax breaks. Passing out the cigars. Patting myself on the back. Test-driving the Jag. Trying on the Rolex. And all those other rich-guy activities I've heard about for so long... |
The reason for the tax in the first place
My tax accountant told me that the tax $$$ are being returned because the tax was originally levied to pay for the Spanish-American war and that it suddenly occurred to someone that the war must have been paid for by now.
