Water Snakes - Green's Basin
 

I am looking at a house in Green's Basin and someone mentioned to me a potential problem with water snakes in and around Gilman Point. Does this imply that all of Green's Basin has a water snake problem? Is there any problem around the Stanyan Road area? Also, how are the swimming conditions in that area? Finally, another thread mentioned that water skiing was allowed in areas of Green Basin.....however, a map suggests that it is mostly a "no wake" zone. Can anyone help clear this up for me?

we have lived in Green's basin for 3 years( near gilman point) and have never seen any water snakes. Also there is a lot of water skiing every summer in the main part of teh basin.

Water snakes are not really a problem,since they are not poisonous and flee at the sight of humans.Actually,they can be useful.We have a good sized one every year that resides in a small outcropping of rocks near the beach.We don't mind an occasional boat rafting off shore,but sometimes (rarely) they swim in to the beach.All I have to do is walk over to the right of the rocks and flush my lil' buddy out in their direction....and off they go....one time dragging the anchor.Kinda fun

I've seen a pretty good size snake swim by my dock before, never bothered me while I was in the water. Don't worry about it, kinds of animals/fish in the lake, means the water's healthy.

thank you for your comments and help.....this forum is an excellent source of information especially when nice people are willing to share their experiences and knowledge with newcomers to the lake.

does anyone have any thoughts on the "swimming" conditions in Green's Basin? I have heard discussion about the water not being very clear and/or milfoil being prevalent?

I was knee-deep in water when a water snake swam within a few inches of me—:eek:—Who knew a snake could swim completely submerged?

What to worry about isn't what's black and non-poisonous, but what's blue-green in Lee's Mills.

The water quality is not terrific, simply because the basin is kind of "closed in", but it's still a great place to swim and fish!

Doesn't Green's Basin have a millfoil problem?? I may be wrong....but I think I've heard it does.

Water snakes are HARMLESS
 

and will not bother you one bit. They only want to get away from you...they may look scary b ut that is all!
