College Rowing Returns to Lake Winnipesaukee This Week-end
 

This Saturday the sport will again take to Lake Winnipesaukee with more than 100 boats competing in 28 categories starting at 9 a.m. on a 4,000-meter course on Meredith Bay, which will finish right in front of the Church Landing gazebo sponsored by the Winnipesaukee Rowing Club.

Sweeet.... should be some good racing! I miss going to the "Head of Charles" Ragatta... I wonder if we can anchor off and watch?

This is how life at the Lake should be.

However, two days later, a hearing will take place, also in Meredith, and if those responsible for the need for the meeting are to be believed, this event should not take place!

Jeopardizing the lives of the occupants of over 100 boats that are expected to compete in Saturday's event is gross negligence in its simplest form, unless those responsible for the participants' safety disagree with the petitioners' reasons for requesting a speed limit on the Lake.

Hope a good time is had by all this Saturday, providing Mother Nature does not rain on their parade.

Dark and rainy skies did not deter the numerous college and high school rowers and their spectators from turning out. On and off rain was offset by a calm surface out on Meredith Bay and the races were on. Rowing eights, fours, twos and singles: lots of rowing shells from schools all over, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Meredith Town Docks parking lot was loaded with large Ford pickups from various schools hauling their rowing shell transporter trailers, loaded with long skinny rowing fiberlass-kevlar shells. Opposite the boat launch ramp, about four canopy tents were set up with food for feeding the crowds. For a rainy day, the turnout was real good.

Didn't see even a single rowing shell made out of mahogoney......apparently that stuff is no longer used. It's all synthetics, now.

Meredith Bay is a terrific venue for watching the races in a somewhat sheltered area of the lake.

So, when's the next rowing race coming back to Meredith and Lake Winnipesaukee? Let's not wait too long!
