Came on my news feed that over 100 schools are closing
Oh boo hoo……5” ? Let’s close stores and government as well
I know this is old….but it’s true
Back in the 50’s we walked to school with as much as 1 foot of snow and had to step aside because Laconia qnd Lakeport still used horse drawn sidewalk plows.They had motorized plows but still used horse’s occasionally.Nothing got closed back then unless it was a major blizzard.Didn’t have cell phones back then so we actually played in the snow and shoveled to make extra money

Snowpocalypse
 

My wife made the mistake and stopped by Hannaford’s in Gilford to get some coffee or something simple. She said it was crazy in there and everyone was prepping for the “snowpocalypse”… just crazy!

Back in my day when it snowed we wrapped barbed wire around our boots for traction and we liked it...back in my day...

Have to remember that the busses have to get up the hills with the kids now. And the worst will be right during the let out of school.
Am I saying I agree? no, I also walked home in a lot of snow, now more kids seem to take the bus, I might be wrong with that, I don't have stats. But I do know that it's more drop off at the house now rather than one bus stop per neighborhood. So the bus stops every 50 feet in some areas.

Did you know that in NH, school buses shall pull over if there are 5 or more vehicles are following? I can't say I have seen many school buses do this - but I have been stuck countless times in many 10-15 car back-ups behind one...

With distracted drivers looking and texting on their phones, I wouldn't want my kids walking to school during a snow storm these days! Things were very different 50 years ago.

This may be the law but I don't ever remember seeing this happen. Usually a bus will dominate the road based upon its sheer size and the driver feels no urge to move out of the way.

Especially non-snow months.

When I was a kid I had to walk to and from school 6 miles up hill even in the snow, both ways.:D

obviously... no one expects the bus to stop on a blind curve or to slam on the brakes and pull over as soon as a 5th car gets in line. I am sure there are ample opportunities to pull over on all of the bus routes... how many times have you seen it happen?

When we lived in SW CT, (2007-2014), there was at least 1 winter storm that I recall in our town that began shortly before school let out and it intensified fast. Some busses full of kids got stuck; some took several hours till after dark to complete their routes; parents had no idea where their kids were or if they were safe. It was chaos. I think towns and school systems today want to completely avoid that scenario and simply cancel school.

Murray brand was acquired by Briggs & Stratton in 2005 who also owns Simplicity, so maybe some of the great quality in Simplicity is there in Murray, too. Someone out there, buy a Murray Flurry snowblower and report back, here ..... good if you got long arms and can reach the manual chute top snow deflector

As one who has made the snow day call for a couple decades, I can tell you no matter what I do someone is upset. I canceled yesterday because of the trip home. At 10:00 I was questioning my decision as the roads where bare, yet by our normal early dismissal time the roads were terrible and stayed that way until well into the evening.

Over the years I have seen more households were a parent/guardian is not at home during the day and most (not all) appreciate an early call regarding changes in the school day as they need to figure out childcare. In my own childhood, my mother did not work outside the home; that seems more the exception than the rule today.

I may have gotten this one right but who knows about the next one!

In the last 10-15 years, peoples ability to deal with the snow, has diminished. At first is was a southern New England issue, but the trend has migrated North word.....Actually I don't think the issue is peoples abilities, as much as it has been the fact that the more life stops the easier the clean up is with fewer vehicles on the road....

Charlie Baker, cancelled life in Massachusetts for a Northeaster, Since then the trend has continued.....

With all that said at least life come to an end for actual snow.... Here in Texas life comes to an end, with the discussion of snow.... which then doesn't materialize.

Seen pull over many times on the same road ... opportunities to pull over... Moultonboro Neck Rd., having built there after getting off Long Island ... the L.I. in NH!

Busses don't stop on blind curves or slam brakes and pull over ... period... where do you live?

I get behind a bus almost every day. The driver is great - she pulls over at three different spots and lets vehicles pass. Always the same spots, and pulls over whether there's one car behind her or 10.

Ended up being 8.5 to 10” in Meredith depending on your location.

I was in Southwest Kentucky this past week during a cold snap. Woke up Tuesday to a dusting of snow, about a 1/4 inch max. No school, some businesses closed and people calling in to work for the day off. Couldn't believe it.

So sorry to all the pickleball players down Naples, Florida ...... www.naplespanorama.org ...... your local hardware no have no snowblowers for snowblowing the courts ..... boo-hoo! ..... :laugh:

Reminiscing
 

In my youth, I always felt bad for my friends in Manchester who never had a snow day--Both parents worked and school was child care for the day. I kind of like the idea of kids getting special advance or intrernet assignments to cover snow days, but I appreciate the value of just getting a surprise day off too. The foolishness is doing make up days in June. Half the kids aren't there, and the teachers have finished their lesson plans for the year. Nothing accomplished. My son's school had finished and I thought it was a great time (uncrowded) to go to Canobie Lake Park. When we arrived, it was overflowing with school bus loads of kids on field trips because they had to do snow make up days.

After decades in the independent school world where, among other things, we did not make up snow days, I am now in public school where we are required to have 180 days. It makes no sense - it would be much better to have a predictable end of the year, on a Friday, and not worry about making up days. Some years there might be more than 180 days, other years fewer. I love the school I am in yet yearn for a little more of the independence I had before moving to public school.
