Marking messages "read"

Everytime I sign off the FORUM, ALL threads and messages are marked as "read". How can I change this setting to mark as "read" only those messages that I have actually clicked on to read?

The Forum software tracks "New" messages, not "Read" messages. When you end a session all the new messages are no longer new and fall off the "New Posts" list.
