Nice show, we liked the #29. The little Penn Yan shown in the bottom of your 3rd photo.

BTW the 500 Bucks boat was a Sears kit made by Chris Craft.

Love that Chris Craft cabin cruiser 2nd from last. Thanks for sharing.

I too loved the PennYan and almost voted that my favorite. The owner of our cottage, Walter Piper, had a red one without the center section.

Do you know what HP the merc was on the PennYan?

I picked up something similar a while ago but it's sat in the garage awaiting it's turn on the project list. The motor is a 1954 Evenrude and I'm having problems with the pressure tank. I rebuilt it but I missed the one way valve. I know the original motor would look better, but I don't know if it works and I like the idea of something more reliable.

The boat looks like a mid fifty's kit built, the hull shape is not PennYan, but it has the front passenger seat. I did find a serial number on the floor grates. The trailer is unsafe for the road so I haven't got it wet yet. At some point I was going to start a thread on it and ask questions, but I noticed the merc on this one. We had to stay home this weekend And I hope to work on it today, at least dig it out from the corner of the garage:)

Cannot be remember what it was but I would guess a 9.9hp Four Stroke.

To me that Mercury outboard looks bigger than a 9.9hp. Looks similar in size to the 25 hp that is on the back of a lot of Whalers.

No not that big. The boat itself is very small so it may look bigger than a 9.9 on a tiny boat.

BYW, the owner said that the boat originally had a canvas hull, like the old canvas over wood Old Town canoes. He had the hull refinished a few years ago.

Edit: I made the mistake of asking my wife about the Penn Yan after rather than before the above answer. She had looked the boat over and talked to the owner. So I just asked her about the outboard. "It was a 25". Are you sure it was not a 9.9? "Defiantly not a 9.9". So there you have it.

Thank you for the replies. The new 4 strokes are heavier than the real old ones. Mine came with a 15 but looks lik it can handle bigger. Ideally for now I'd like to find a 15 - 25 hp OEM circ '58 - late ’60's with a fuel pump so I could use a new tank and the current steering and controls should fit.

I built a wooden kayak, I'll get this 12’ wooden boat going and hopefully stop there:rolleye1: But I miss the old 17’ ski boat ( just not the upkeep :). )
