Watersports activity suggestions?
 

Hi,

Coming to Meredith in July for 3 nights - would like to perhaps hire kayaks or canoes for few hours for the family some day. Anywhere local recommended?

Is it possible (or even permitted) to hire a small powered-boat to tour around the lake? I've no license (if one is required!), but just looking to try something new. :)

Maybe water-skiing or jet-skiing hire?

I know they rent boats at the Meredith Marina and Thurston's (at Weirs Beach). Depending on how old you are you may not need a boating license. There is a cut-off date when you will need to definitely have one but I don't know what the ages are.

You can rent jet skis at the Handy Landing store on Weirs Blvd. next to the Naswa hotel or at Y Landing Marina off of Meredith Neck Rd. in Meredith (they only have a few there though so call ahead and see if they're available).

There are a lot more places to rent both boats and jet skis and you can access all the information right here on this site. Goto "Lake Links" on the home page. Then click "Boating". It will have hours of operation, addresses, and phone numbers.

You might also want to purchase a chart now and get to know a little bit about where you might be when you decide where to rent. Here's a good link for that.

I say this from experience. I hit my first rock about ten minutes after launching my first new boat and I got a ticketed for violating the 150' rule, which I had not clue about, within the first month.

I am pretty sure that even if you do not have a liscense, they have a provision for renters. It's sort of a crash course on learning the laws of the lake. If you plan to do this, you will be much better off by reading up before hand. It's nothing outrageously difficult, but some preplanning is always good. And just remember to not get beyond your comfort level.

BTW, I'm 40+ and, as we only plan to do some light cruising, if we get a boat hired we'd be happy with a boat stuck in first gear .... I assume there is a first gear ... ;)

First gear or not, if you find your own little piece of the Granite State both you and you're prop will know it. Good luck and give us wave.

BTW, great choice with Church Landing. Phenomenal atmosphere. I own up here and I'm tempted to dish out the cash for a night's stay. My 12 year old has already informed me that's where she's is getting married. :eek:
