Robert Cray

Anyone else go see Robert Cray at the Flying Monkey tonight?

What a great performance he put on! Great singer, great guitar player and a superb band to back him up! Very impressed!

Food from the common Man was served and it was great!

I'm surprised that such a small-ish, out-of-the-way venue had someone the caliber of Robert Cray! I would have loved to have seen him.....you lucky dog!

I think he likes playing venues like that. I've seen him at the Hampton Beach Casino, Paradise Rock Club in Boston, and, during a crazy flash lightning storm, at Meadowbrook, before the pavilion was built--half the audience left, which meant our seats were instantly upgraded and, "unless this rain does something to the PA system," he played the whole show. Probably my most memorable performance.

Very jealous! I wish I had known. He is one of my favorites. Did he do the song, "Moan"?

No he didn't unfortunately. Great song though! He did mostly stuff from his new album, "In My Soul" and a few of his older hits as well as a couple John Lee Hooker covers. Also did some off the cuff jams.

Not to rub it in, but he was awesome! :D

I remember Meadowbrook when they first open. The stage was the original stage that they found the bomb in front of in Atlanta back in the 80's?

I watch the Allman Bros. in the pouring rain under a blanket in front of the stage!

Most memorable events were Ringo Starr and his all star band and BB King Birthday celebration!

Thanks Dan! Now I don't feel as bad about missing a chance to see him, that is my favorite song by him. He is a great talent. Wish I had been there.

Wished I'd been there.....one of my favorite bluesmen.
Did he do "I Pity the Fool"? Seen him do that song in a duet with Shamika Copeland and others and he always brings down the house.

Mr. V 03-19-2015 10:56 AM

I saw him play at smaller venues (nightclubs) in Portland, Or. in the late seventies while he was "paying his dues" after beginning his career in Eugene, Or.

The guy was/is good: he hit the ground running and never looked back.

The State Theatre in Portland is a neat location to watch a show like this. It was renovated a couple of years ago. Portland has really caught its stride in recent years. Seeing the RCB there midwinter would be a nice take. The Press hotel on Congress is an excellent place to stay after seeing the show.

Thank you. Just bought mine

topwater 11-25-2015 05:58 PM

Thanks for the heads up. Just bought mine for the wife and I. 20 feet from center stage. Won't beat the seats we had at the Joe Bonamassa concert at the Hampton Beach Ballroom, 2nd row center stage...But these will still be great.:liplick:

There are no bad seats at the Monkey and the acoustics are great! You will enjoy the show!

I saw Bonamassa also in Boston a few years ago. He was great!

Recently announced!
Robert Cray at the Stone Mountain Arts Center September 14, 2016
Stone Mountain is located in Brownfield, ME just over the NH/ME border and not far from the King Pine Ski Area so easily accessible from the Wolfeboro/Moultonboro side of the lake. It is a renovated barn that seats about 300 people and if you reserve early they'll also serve dinner! I just ordered tickets.

So reading about a new arts center is not going to blow your socks off, make your jaw drop or even get your undies in a bunch like my not so classy husband might say. But this is not like any performing arts center, non profit with"bored" of directors, or fancily renovated city hall. This is a humble 200 seat timber frame music hall nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains in little Brownfield Maine... Brownfield that literally burned to the ground in the forties...Brownfield that has a post office and a corner store filled with snowmobilers or canoers depending on what time of year it is ...Brownfield where artists like Marty Stuart , Mary Chapin Carpenter, Béla Fleck, Capitol Steps, and Paula Poudstone might pass a trailer, a few cows, or the occasional loose horse on their way up the hill. Up the hill to the Stone Mountain Arts Center, next door to Vinnie the pizza guy who parked cars for us one night with a bow tie and a cane., or Dan Shea's house who put the red clapboards up on this barn only 8 months ago......or Irving Potter's grand farm, who is referred to in a closing song of the monthly Stone Mountain LIVE Variety Show:
Well we've come to the end of our little show
Please drive safe and please drive slow
As you drive down the hill please check out your brakes
We don't want you to run into Irving Potter's place. (in full chorus).

You won't regret it! Awesome musician and his band is great!

Treat yourself to Stone Mountain Arts

I can't say enough good things about Stone Mountain Arts Center. It is a gem venue in the middle of.....well nowhere! You will not regret going there to see one of their many class acts and the food is delicious too. I don't do big concerts anymore because there are too many A-holes shooting out what they want to hear. At SMAC there is respect and admiration for the artist. SMAC deserves music lovers support. I don't know how they make it in drawing so many talented artists but they do. Give them a try.

mcdude 09-15-2016 08:24 AM

No regrets!

Last night was the big night for Robert Cray at SMAC. I can't say enough good things about the venue or the the show. I can't wait to go again! There is not a bad seat in the house. We were so close we could see all of his fancy guitar work. Impressive. He was very personable and engaged the audience and.....yes....the food was delicious. What a great way to spend an evening.

Robert Cray is one of the many underappreciated musicians in America--he's both an incredible guitarist and vocalist. I'm glad you enjoyed the experience!

Saw Robert Cray open for Eric Clapton back in the late 80's. Both amazing guitarists!

For those of you who have not been to SMAC, it is an awesome and intimate venue.

Who ever you go to see there will leave you happier as a result of the venue.
