Older Boat - what to do
 

Question...I have an older boat sitting in the garage for 3 or 4 seasons now it's a mid 80's (I fell dumb to say I'm not positive of the year this instant!) Any-who thinking about just getting rid of it gave up the dock on Winni and the boating bug is gone. It's got a split windshield and half of it is missing. What's my best bet? I'm thinking maybe donation to not be bothered for the amount it's worth. Suggestions?? Thank you.

When it was time to get rid of my old boat, I sold it to M&M Marine Salvage. I didn't get much for it - maybe $100, but that's better than paying dump fees. The business is on Jenness Hill Rd, Meredith - just north of town a bit off route 3. It wasn't the smoothest transaction I've ever done - but the boat was gone.

What to do with old boat
 

Consider donating the boat to The Huggins Hospital fair. They have a big auction each summer and I have seen boats auctioned off. They have a large storage barn on Rt 109A in Wolfeboro so they take items for the fair year round.

Donate the your boat to the NH Boat Museum in Wolfeboro. They accept boat donations and they sell them to raise money for the Museum.

ok thanks all great ideas if I donate it I'd probably like to see it go to animals/MSPCA or something like that. It's a 19 foot Cuddy not made anymore the name is GlassStream (no not Glastron.) I was fooling around trying to get a value a few years ago on the computer and with a trailer it said around 1,500 - 2,000

First questions on value are does it float and does it run?

It is going to be very hard to find a windshield for a 30 year old boat made by a company that doesn't exist anymore. So the next set of value questions: is it usable with the windshield as is or with no windshield?

If not you need to resolve the issue, can you make a decent replacement panel with flat or bent plexi-glass, can you fit a generic windscreen. The windsheild cost issue could easily swamp the value of the boat.

Scrap the boat and sell the trailer.

If you only have half a windshield you could have issues donating the boat..... Although the donations centers will accept boats, often they do require that it be in good enough shape to be sold. The bottom line is they don't want to have to scrap the boat if they can't sell it....

If you really don't know the condition of the boat, handing it off to a Salvage Yard is probably your best bet if you don't want to deal with all kinds of hassles.

A friend of mine just bought an old junker boat for $125. He cut the transom out, dragged the 4 cylinder engine and outdrive out of the boat and took it to a junk yard for scrap. Then he cut the rest of the boat up.

Bottom line: He figured he got a pretty good Trailer for $125 and some cash in his pocket for the scrapped engine/outdrive. :D NB

You can determine the model year of the boat by the last 2 digits of the HIN number.

I know the date, when bought, etc just have it at home. The windshield can be replaced, a marine service a few years ago said it's a few bucks, temepered glass maybe? Person guessed like $400-500. I'll probably donate it this summer and free up one side of the garage that hasn't been open in 20 years. Last time it was in the water it ran fine (4-5 summers ago.) Can't speak for what it'll run like after sitting around. It looks very good for it's aged it's always been garaged when not in the water summers. Thanks for your suggestions. :D

curious when he cut the rest of the boat up, what did he do with it?

I have no idea..I didn't ask..:look: I presumed he cut it up into bite size pieces and took it to the town compactor. Our town compactor site has big dumpsters on the side that are segregated into various "other" catagorys....electronics, scrap metal, yard waste, construction (demolition) debris, appliances, etc. :) NB

I know a guy who swears he disposed of a mid-70's Chevy Caprice by cutting it up with a torch and putting a couple bags a week out with the trash.

Thanks APS...I'm not concerned about someone wanting this boat at least for an auction. To look at it you'd think it was almost half the age that it is, it would certanly bring in something! It's going somewhere this summer - one way or the other!
