places to snorkel?
 

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are heading up to Winni in a couple weeks and we are going to bring our snorkel stuff on the boat. Is there any ship wrecks that you can see while snorkeling? Also, are there any places you recommend we go? Is there anywhere that has a good fish population or cool rock formations?

Lake charts like Bizer have numerous wreckage/dive sites marked. A quick search on this forum will also provide explanations on what your find at each location.

I would also suggest Roberts Cove for some nice shallow natural rock formations, boulders, etc.

We went to a sunken barge in Paugus Bay last summer that was pretty cool. Its about 10 or more feet under with lots of large bass hanging around. If you come under the Weirs bridge into the bay, go to the right. Go past the pipe under the RR tracks that lead into pickeral Cove. There is a birch tree onshore a little after that and the barge is out from that. I rely on landmarks because I don't have any of the fancy radar systes...lol

I have seen some amazingly large numbers of young fish (yellow perch and bluegills, mostly) schooling in gaps in the weed bed at the very end of Braun Bay. There's often larger predatory fish like pickerel and bass lurking in at the edges of the weedbed gaps, clearly waiting for a meal. It's a very cool thing to see. The colors are stunning on a bright day.

The Belknap is a cool wreck to snorkel. It's near the south end of the bridge between Birch and Steamboat Islands, on the east side of the islands. The wreck starts pretty close to shore and extends out.

There's some interesting volcanic rock formations in the shallow water to the east of the red markers in the Varney Island channel. Nothing mind-blowing though.

You beat me to it. RG seems to really like snorkeling on the northwestern side of Parker Island. (On a calm day) Exploring the unusual rocks keep her busy for a long time. It's only about 6 feet or so. Easy anchor.

19 mile bay
 

At 19 Mile Bay between the public beach and the docks, along the shore next to the highway. Lots of big weeds and fish hiding out. [but don't tell the fisherfolk.]
