This is great to know. We go to boat shows for fun. It's a great, inexpensive winter activity. Sometimes we have bought small items from vendors at the shows. Boat cushions, atomic tape etc.

hancoveguy 02-10-2011 07:49 PM

Heads up, if there is something you need, buy it at the boat show. I bought roughly $1500 worth of stuff from west marine last year and spent maybe $700 and they shipped it all for free. we are talking about almsot 60% off each item I ordered.

I will be hitting that booth again this year for sure.

Was this the result of a negotiation on your part or a special they were doing for everyone?

donnamatrix 02-16-2011 05:01 PM

You deserve a new boat!

Oh, wait... what will Karen have to say? Did you get your invoice for the slip yet? An eye opener... our boat is 11 years old this year... and we'll have it forever... looking forward to seeing you guys!

hancoveguy 02-17-2011 10:50 AM

They had a small booth set up with some specials and a few computer terminals. I asked about an item I was looking for and they punched it up and offered it to me at the discounted price. I asked if everything was discounted and they said no but most was. I bought 4 or 5 more items and they all happened to be way discounted. No haggling or negotiations, they seemed happy to offer the discount...

The boat show and an old man

So, we have been getting the emails about the boat show, and we have this thread, and we had a wonderful boating season last year, and are looking forward to another good year, and so (repeated word intentional!) wanting to take the train from Dover into Boston to go to the show, and having already printed out our tickets for the show, I sat down last night and made our reservations on the Downeaster. Even splurged on going business class.

Got up this morning, grabbed everything and headed for Dover. Good drive even with the inch or so of new snow, a nice train ride into Boston, a easy run on the "T" (my have things changed over the years). Got off the Silver Line at the World Trade Center station, walked across the street and could not get into the Convention Center. So (there's that word again) we walked over to the Westin Hotel and asked the concierge how to get into the show, and after seeing the surprise on the young man's face, I knew what I had done :laugh:.

Yep, a nice dry run to get to the Boat Show that we are still looking forward to go to.

So (yep, again) as not to waste the day, we got back on the T, got off for the Blue line to go to the Aquarium, only to find out they are running shuttle busses to Aquarium. It's not that far a walk so we walked down in a wind chill of a gazillion below zero, and saw a throng (not thong) of mommies and daddies and kiddies, a huge line, an Oh My Gosh line, and did a 180 and went to Legal Seafood for lunch. Then it was back to North Station for a nearly three hour wait for the 5PM train.

What better way to kill some of that time than to do a pub crawl next to N. S. . Did I mention Disney on ice with an 11AM show and a 3 PM show? Yet another throng of kiddies, but they don't like to sit at the bar, but we do.:D So (last one) a couple of drinks and a nacho appetizer, and we wandered back to N. S., caught the train back to Dover, and made it home.

Now that we have done our dry run, we will be seasoned travellers once again, and WILL have a great time at the boat show NEXT week.

That is if they let me out of the padded cell motel!:emb:

Dave, thanks for the pre-show dry run report! How was the train ride??? We are looking to be there next weekend but thought of driving in. After your dry run maybe we will take the train from Havehill, MA. BTW do you have a review of the pub next door to N S?

And yes LMAO -thanks. I needed that.

Chaos 02-21-2011 10:49 PM

I hope you won't mind

if I say that by the second "so" I was LMAO! I do feel bad, but I'm still laughing as I type this, so Thank You for the story.

Mike

So I am not the only one thats showed up for the show early, thank heaven. I am getting excited about going to this years show and if it wasn't for traveling for work probably would have occupied the bar stool right next to you.

gf2020 02-23-2011 09:22 PM

upthesaukee, that was one of the funnier bits I have read in a while. Not having the boat show during the MA school vacation week seems a little strange to me too.

What's even funnier is that America's Got Talent auditions will be at the BCEC this weekend in addition to the boat show.

Went to the show Saturday morning. It was excellent. The atmosphere was more positive this year than the last two. The area for displays was down a little. Many of the Winnipesaukee area marinas were there. There was a booth that was giving a free sample of a single malt scotch - nice perk.

Watch your shoes!

I haven't been yet, planning this week. A friend went yesterday and apparently while he was checking out a Formula (shoes off of course), someone mistook his shoes for theirs. Too funny! What's worse, they weren't even the right size. Wouldn't you think something was up if you put a pair of shoes on that was one size too big and only 5 minutes before, they fit?

So, my friend had to finish the show in a pair of strangers' shoes, one size too small. I heard he plans to burn them today.

Stolen Shoes

@ Chaos,

I think your friend is my friend too and his Facebook post had me cracking up. If he's the owner of Miss Mandi we have a friend in common and maybe I'll see you this summer.

Winnisumergal, we are definitely talking about the same poor slob. I couldn't stop laughing. He was on a Formula no less

Maybe I will see you this summer, if summer ever shows up this year!

Slow Year.

I went to the show on Tuesday. It was great to see the Lake's boat dealers there and it was interesting to see that some of the boat manufactures have changed dealers on the Lake.

One common comment made by the dealers is how slow the sales are. They believe the rising fuel costs and tougher credit is contributing to the slow sales. Saturday and Sunday had large crowds but there was very little sales activity. Monday was very very slow, Tuesday was a bit better.

Overall, this current show location is far better than the previous location.

I can remember a time when the day after the Boston boat show ended there would be over a hundred posts on the forum and so far there are only twenty. Must have been slow!

I left plenty of money there...I am very excited for the arrival of our new toy. A big thumbs up for Ryan and Winnisquam Marine. He was great to deal with and bent over backwards to work with a very demanding client (me :D).
