Northern lights/Aurora borealis

Has anyone seen them? I had an e-mail from a friend in HI who had heard a news story about how spectacular they are in the area. I do recall a news story here, too, but no first hand reports. Information about viewing time would be welcomed.

Saw a report on the news but haven't seen anything. But my house faces south.
