Rafting at the Weirs
I don't understand the reason for no rafting anchoring or mooring at the Weirs durring bike week. If I were the sponsor of this event I would be very upset. We have already lost nearly half of the annual attendance for the week and now we're discouraging another group. Certainly, boaters aren't known to cause a lot of trouble and most have some disposable income.....so why keep them from joining in the fun?
They used to allow vehicles in the Weirs and many people with street roads and customs would "cruise" with the bikes....everyone enjoyed it. Sure, traffic was nuts, but you knew that in advance and it was fun to join in the parade. So it's no cars and now no boats....smart. Who dreams this stuff up? Marine Patrol or Laconia PD? Sorry to get negative with a fun week coming up but I just think that the public and business community is not being served well with these bonehead decisions. |
Probably someone complained about the noise or congestion and then they got others to complain and express that they didn't feel safe boating around the rafters or that they couldn't enjoy the peace and quiet of the lake, and a rule/law was enacted preventing mooring, rafting, anchoring, etc. during Bike Week. ;)

Just to clarify - the docks are closed at the Weirs?

usually they close the side of the docks facing the street. They extend the swim lines from the swim area to the nearest dock. Plus there is this rule in place since at least 2001:
Saf-C 404.11 Special Weirs Beach Restriction. (a) No person shall anchor, moor, or raft as defined by RSA 270:42, IV, in the Weirs Beach area of Lake Winnipesaukee in the City of Laconia from: (1) An imaginary line that runs from the northeastern corner of the Winnipesaukee Pier to the northern-most light buoy that marks the northern-most end of the Weirs Channel and continuing on to the shoreline; and (2) All points south of said imaginary line to include the Weirs Channel area to the lighted navigational aid marking the southern-most end of the Weirs Channel. (b) This rule shall be implemented each year, beginning on the Wednesday before the annual Motorcycle Week in Laconia, at Weir’s Beach and ending at noon on the last day of Motorcycle Week. |
