E.F Payne 8ft 3 piece 2 tips for Sale

Hello All,
I am currently looking to sell an E.F Payne bamboo fly rod. It has been serviced and is ready for the river. $3200 negotiable. Please email me at jhocker2382@gmail.com for further details the this item. It has been appraised by F.D Kretchman rods in Kittery Point.

Thank you

Joe

Memories

Haven't heard about Payne rods in a long time. My grandfather had a 3 piece 9 footer back when I was a kid. He let me try it a few times but it was too long for me to handle (or appreciate) at the time. Years after he passed I asked my grandmother about it. She said it was probably with some of his stuff she threw away (insert tears here).
Beautifully crafted rods but like vintage guitars, they only exist in my dreams.
I wish you luck selling it. Hopefully, you have it listed elsewhere as well.

Thank you Bob,
This truly is a rare find. It is a model 202 or 201. Built by Jim Payne between 1951-1956 sold by Abercrombie and Fitch NY. During the servicing and appraisal I learned that the rod was most likely refinished by the Payne shop in the mid to late 1960s. Amazingly it was stored from that point until I came across it. Items like this are always best viewed in person. But I did my best to take a picture of the set.

Just for kicks, I checked out one site that sells E. F. Payne rods. I know nothing about fly fishing and have never tried it, but it's stunning to see what these rods cost. Most rods appear to average about $3,000 with one going for $5,400. Sheesh. I guess they're the Cadillac of the sport and I can only imagine what collectible rods go for. They've been in business since 1898.

Certainly the picture does it no justice. And here I am with my $150 graphite 8 footer from 1998. Not complaining but I go places I would never bring a beauty like that to. I'd be a nervous wreck.
