Help me help my son
 

Hi!
My son, 9, LOVES fishing. I do not, but I'm willing to take him out/help him.

He's at the point of wanting more than just worm and bobber fishing. Suggestions on next steps? Types of lures, resources? If there are some decent places in the north of the lake, please PM me--we can either go from shore or off the 'toon.

Try some trolling! Assuming you have the basic rod and reel already, add a few lures like a Rapala (not deep diving) or some Mepps spinners with a bucktail.
Bass and other types of warm water species love a trolled lure! Red colored lures work especially good on bass and pickerel. Trolling can be troublesome in shallower waters as your lure can get hung up on underwater structure.
You could also get some rubber worms and cast to the edges of lily pad areas.
When I used to bass fish the black rubber worm was a killer lure. Just cast to the edges of lily pads or toward structure like fallen trees large boulders or even docks (be careful not to hook the dock owner’s property!)
If you want to get fancy, get a couple of rods with lead core line and troll for trout and salmon! A bit more knowledge is necessary for this fishing but a bait shop owner ( like AJ’s in Meredith) can give you tips about all types of fishing.
Most if all make it fun for the kid!

For a kid, nothing beats a lot of action.

If you are limited to the lake I’ll let others with more Winni experience offer their advice.

If you can go out in a small boat or canoe, hit the smaller ponds in the area.

Use a #7 Gold floating Rapala (F-7 model).

Toss it in 1’-4’ of water.

The fish will do the rest!

You mean the Moultonboro Area? Tons of places to fish! Would love to have settled in that area!

Plenty of fish around any of the islands on the big lake. The closer you get to the Walmart side of the lake the more rock bass you get! MHO. If you do catch a rock bass kindly put it aside and trash those bastards! Endangered specie that cause all kinds of problems!

I have my dad's two 'worm wands' plug it into an electrical outlet while the wands are in the ground and tons of worms come squirming out of the soil! Best bait for kids! Grandkids love it! In fact my 9 yr old granddaughter caught a 10" rainbow trout just off Diamond Island with a worm as bait! Still couldn't believe it!

About the Worm Wand, I just read a book that revolved around "worm grunting"!

No lure has ever worked off our dock, worms only, I just tried the #7 Gold Floating Rapala I dusted off from my old tackle box and caught two bass in 5 minutes. Thanks!!

For off the dock fishing, a small (1/16 oz) single hook "rooster tail", (black in color seems to work best) with small worm attached will certainly attract most any species of fish.

I think INVASIVE species, not endangered. Yes, do not catch and release rock bass. Catch and garden.

A fellow forum member graciously offered to take L'il Buddy and me out fishing yesterday AM and what a great morning we had! Caught some fish--four nice salmon, a rainbow trout, and a rock bass (boo)--learned a lot about technique and gear, enjoyed an awesome sunrise, and had some great conversation.
