Halo around the sun
Today I was kayaking on Squam Lake and there was a gigantic orange, yellow, and green halo around the sun at 4:30 p.m. It lasted a long time, like 45 minutes. Even though it was more than an hour before sunset, the horizon was orange and pink like at sunset. This happened as the clouds were moving in. Was this halo visible over Winnipesaukee? What causes this?

Hurry. Check out the sunrise today. Beautiful orange clouds. |
Its caused by atmospheric water vapor....
Woodsy |
It’s caused by sunlight refracting off ice crystals.

Gilly girl and woodsay are right. They are called sun dogs, and they’re caused by water vapors in the sky, sometimes crystallized if it’s cold enough/high enough. Very cool to see! If you’re lucky you can see all four points around it!!
