Massachusetts

My business does a lot of work in Massachusetts (construction). We have just been informed that the state is shutting down including construction sites. The Governor of Mass is supposed to be making an announcement this afternoon...

Dan

The Real BigGuy 03-23-2020 09:57 AM

Just did: a stay-at-home advisory closing non-essential business thru 4/7

Out of Staters

On another forum a few people are complaining that they are seeing lot of cars from Mass and NY driving north. They want to stop out of staters. They are afraid goods and services will be depleted. I know a family member undergoing chemo is self isolating for a few days at their camp. Brought all their food with them. Too bad the locals do not appreciate what the seasonals bring to their tax base.

I have had it for 12 years, bought it new... I can thank Spooner and his crew at Diamond-shine for keeping it looking so good!!

They did a fantastic job. I think I’m going to book them for next spring instead of using my marina.

The marinas know...Several hire Diamond-shine to go to Boston and clean up their boats at the NE Boat Show.

Not tax base

I'm not concerned about taxes. I am concerned that people from a very intensely infected area are bringing the virus to NH. If it makes sense for Gov. Cuoimo to tell people to isolate, why should they be out and about here? Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard are telling people to stay away, don't come here to use your seasonal home. Rural and resort areas don't have the capacity to care for high numbers of infections.

Sag Harbor a very small town in the Hamptons on Long Island similar to Wolfboro was overrun this weekend with people retreating to their summer home from NYC. They shut the town down at 8pm last night.

Beautiful rig!!!
I was recently told (3 months ago or so), by a N.H. Marine Patrol boating certificate instructor, that the validation sticker should be foremost toward the bow- both sides.

Every one else's understanding of this?

Validation stickers in NH are always to the right and within 6” of the numbers.

The yearly sticker is located perfectly correct as shown.

Say-hey ..... I pay $50/yr for the sticker on my 16' Alumacraft-40hp ....... am guessing the yearly sticker for your Eastern lobster boat costs like $300?

I think if it’s anywhere near the bow numbers, you’ll never get hassled.
On the other hand, one time on Winnisquam years ago some female MP gave my GF a ticket for using non-block letter black numbers. Her boat had some very nice dark green/gold outline lettering that was easy to read...just being a bitch I thought.

dt5150 03-23-2020 03:26 PM

i thought the bottom half was black? did you paint it, or have i been wrong all this time?

mine's still wrapped given this evening's forecast :rolleye2:

i plan to hopefully unwrap it next weekend to get her ready. got a few minor things to do it it before dunking it. i also need to make sure my dock is ready too, in case it needs any spring repair work, but i'm in the same spot as last year. itching to wash some lures though!!

The original hull had red antifouling paint. I had it removed and redone last year.

Especially strange since all of these out of staters arrive every Summer to deplete those same goods and services

huh... i always thought it was black

Gov Brown has done thrown the switch on Massachusetts, putting it into lock-down!

Here in the 'Live Free or Die' state of New Hampshire we ain't got no lock-down going on, and all 77-state liquor stores are doing some strong, 100-proof business, today!

So's, you just can eat your poor lock-down heart out, Massachusetts! .... ...... is what I say.

The Governor of MA is Gov. Charlie Baker. Nice try to have a scoop on the news that's factual.

Your instructor was very wrong... In fact NH really has no input on where the stickers go... The convention is set by the USCG.... It is a universal system used by every state...

NH fought for years against it, they where the last state to adopt it... but finally when the Federal Government transportation secretary, said that if they didn't the would loose funding they adopted the convention, and granted reciprocity to boats registered in other states....

Some in NH and the Marine Patrol are still a little sore on the subject....

The only difference is that the store and corporate store owner are prepared for summer.

I thought the law read that now numbers had to be block letters a contrasting color to the boat color. I didn’t think it said only black

Yes...well hers were dark green but not “block”
That’s probably what irked the MP woman. They were very visible nonetheless

Influx of out of staters

NH is having an influx of people from MA, and we just watched a press conference by Governor DeSantis, who claims that Florida is having more than 190 flights per day from NY vs. 28 per day last week before Cuomo did shelter in place for all residents. That’s just what Florida needs with its population of senior citizens......a bunch of Manhattanites with the Coronavirus! Almost everything is closed down here....it’s borderline creepy, but the good news is that traffic is manageable. Stay healthy, everyone...and stay home!

I fear it is too late to save the areas with naturally less infections from the influx of those seeking safe havens, but are introducing it.

It would be my guess that Flylady was referring to hoarding v. the normal, summer depletion.

As a solid independent, I worry about every character flaw or health concern for any candidate: lack of honesty, lack of empathy, decreased mental acuity, an aversion to taking responsibility, an unwillingness or inability to work for the greater good, personality disorders, etc. just to name a few. No matter who the candidate is.

Do you remember when, on September 7, 1988, in a speech to the American Legion, George H.W. Bush said "Today is Pearl Harbor Day..."? Was this just a slip of the tongue? Evidence of declining mental acuity? Something else? Who really knows. He was Vice-President at the time and running for President, with the election two months away. He won that election, so I guess a lot of people were willing to overlook the historical error for whatever reason. There is no such thing as a perfect person, so there will never be a perfect president. The question is, how much imperfection are we willing to allow in someone who is entrusted with great power and great responsibility?

The Vt. governor who ran for president- on stage (after what I guess had been a good day in the polls) jumping up and down, yelling, ranting, cheering to "his team"?

Killed his run.

Yeah, understood on this and the other folks who have taken exception to my post. What I was trying to articulate is that locals (or maybe I should be saying year-rounders) can't quite have it both ways.

If you're a year-rounder and you wish there was no Mass-driven Summer economy and the lake was still undeveloped, then I sympathize if you're grumpy about the early arrival of Summer home-owners.

But if you appreciate the Summer economy's jobs and tax base, then I do not sympathize with complaints that people should not be using their houses.
