Unique MA/NH Beaches?
 

Not Winni related, but y'all are a wealth of info. Looking for unique beaches to take the kiddos--think tide pools, tide-created sandbars, limited-time-due-to-tide islands, etc. Southern Maine to northern MA, please. Thanks!

First thing that came to mind when you mentioned tidal pools is Biddeford Pool area in Maine. Pretty cool.

I've taken him, BTW, just not to anything major because of the available times and weather needs. I really wish there was something in the north.

Ok...I'll share my special beach with you but to appreciate it you have to plan to be there at low tide.
Popham beach in Phippsburg Maine is about two hours from here but one of the most beautiful beaches you'll ever see.
Two islands that you can walk to at low tide but don't get caught because there are dangerous rip currants
when the tide comes back in along a narrow sandbar.Several miles of beach with driftwood, rocky outcroppings, tidal rivers and an occasional harbor seal.Even on a busy day you can find a quiet spot....it's so huge and for the most part it's not that busy because there are no condo developments, arcades or hotels and attractions.
Only a sleepy little fishing village with a few guest houses and one very nice waterfront restaurant.
This is not a typical straight beach.It winds around tidal rivers, tidal pools, rocks and islands but the most amazing thing is the level of the beach itself.
It is very shallow on the south side of the state park beach and the tide goes out about 1/8 of a mile and it's almost unnerving,but exciting to be that far from shore.When the tide is out the sun warms the sand which also warms the water as it returns.
It's doable as a day trip or try to book a room at Spinneys....they have a guest house and several cottages.
If you have little ones, you'll probable want to park at the state park beach.If you park near the fort by Spinney's its a beautiful,but 4 mile walk to the shallow part of the beach.
Check it out on Google Earth and give it a try.....bet it will be your favorite beach forever.

Go to Wingaersheek Beach (Gloucester, MA). We had three boys and this beach was always a favorite. Plenty of beach, but best are all the rocks to climb over, always changing with the tides. Parking is always limited, so get there early because its worth it! Have fun!

Tough to take this article serious when Revere beach is in the top 20

But look at the bright side! You can find all kinds of beach artifacts like seashells, beach glass, needles, condoms, oops...

Haha--as a kid who grew up in Malden, I had the same thought!

But I posted for two reasons. First, it did have lots of factually correct details on many less well known beaches, such as the more idyllic Popham, recommended by another poster. Second, Revere Beach is the home of Kelly's Roast Beef--their fried clams alone are worth the trip!!! (at least if it's dark out)

I grew up in beautiful Saugus Ma and spent some time on scenic Revere beach and it is not a terrible beach. I just do not think it is top 20 material.

My wife is from mid-coast Maine and raves about Popham beach.:)

We had friends that had a camp on Popham Beach. It was very quiet and nice. I think at the time there was concern because a lot of the houses were falling into the ocean but I haven't heard anything about that lately.

This was going to be my suggestion as well. It really is a fun beach. My parents used to take us kids there back in the day (70's). Although I haven't been there in over 25 years, I am sure it is still just as awesome.

One question on Popham--aren't all the Maine beaches brutally cold? My parents are in York, ME, and even there it's only the hardy that swim. Even compared to the ocean in Massachusetts, to say nothing of the lake.

If the goal is swimming and snorkeling for the kids, Mass is looking a lot better.
