Winnipesaukee Forum - Important Events Around the Lake

What an exciting time it is around the lake! Summer is on its way and folks are pulling their boats out of a long waited winter storage to enjoy the tranquility of Winni. There are a few events that we would like to put on your radar. The Lake Winnipesaukee Association will be participating in or co-hosting these events, in addition to continuing to coordinate the water quality monitoring program, manage the Be Winni Blue & LakeSmart program, track cyanobacteria observations and implement restoration projects around the watershed.

Saturday, May 14: The Wentworth Watershed Association is hosting their 4th annual Water Summit at the Town Hall in Wolfeboro at 9am. Ted Diers, NHDES, will give a presentation on road salt and the impacts to water quality. Local lake associations will also give brief updates on the work they are doing to protect our water bodies.

Thursday, June 2- Friday, June 3: NH Lakes is hosting the Lakes Congress at Church Landing in Meredith. Come out on Thursday evening for a presentation about “Celebrating New Hampshire’s Freshwater Boating Heritage” by Martha Cummings, the Executive Director at the NH Boat Museum. On Friday, the Lakes Congress will feature a keynote presentation on “Preparing for the New Normals in NH’s climate- The science behind NH’s State Climate Assessment” by Mary Stampone, New Hampshire State Climatologist. Join various sessions to learn about lake-related topics from around the state and to learn actions you can take in your community. LWA’s Conservation Manager will speak in collaboration with NH Lakes on the Winni Blue & LakeSmart program and will be hosting a workshop in Hesky Park with Belknap Landscaping.

Saturday, June 4: Join the Lake Kanasatka Watershed Association and FB Environmental as they host a public discussion on the results of their findings for the Lake Kanasatka Watershed Management Plan. The event will be held at Moultonborough Academy from 10:00am-12:00pm. The discussion will focus on the watershed and shoreline survey results, the build-out analysis, lake loading response model and overall water quality goals. Tuesday, July 12: The Moultonborough Conservation Commission and Lake Winnipesaukee Association are hosting a “Cyanobacteria & What You Need to Know” presentation at the Moultonborough Library from 3pm-4pm. Amanda McQuaid, Water Quality State Specialist with UNH, and the former Harmful Algal Bloom Coordinator for NHDES, will be the main speaker. The discussion will focus on the basics of cyanobacteria, how to identify cyanobacteria, the risks to human and animal health, the environmental and ecological impacts, how to report an observation/bloom and management strategies.

Wednesday, July 20: The Waukewan Watershed Advisory Committee in collaboration with the Windy Waters Conservancy and the Lake Winnipesaukee Association are hosting a discussion titled “Do You Have Concerns About the Health of Your Lake?” Join us to learn what you can do to protect your lake’s health, drinking water, swimming spots and property value. The purpose of this event is to inform community members on the threats to Lake Waukewan and surrounding waterbodies, to address concerns regarding cyanobacteria, and to provide recommendations on individual actions to reduce nutrient loading. This event will be held at the Meredith Community Center and doors open at 6:30pm.
