Cat Adoption Suggestions?
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do with an elderly cat-person's litter once they are no longer able to care for their cats? We are looking after my husband's grandfather's 7 cats while he is in the nursing home, but he will most likely not be returning home. We will have to sell the cats' house and cannot adopt them ourselves. They are in good health, fixed, and current on shots, and some of them don't mind dogs. Any suggestions, other than euthanasia and abandonment, would be great.

Cat suggestion
....maybe bring them to a cat-house? :laugh::laugh:
I believe you can bring cats to the petco, (or is it petsmart?), in Gilford, near Walmart and they then have them there for adoption. Also, try local vets...sometimes they will take cats in and offer them up for adoption. Also try the humane society, but not sure if they give them the needle after a while if not adopted. MM |

Humane Society
is your best bet. However they are adamantly requesting a large donation to drop of your pet. Because of this, most pets ends up on the streets and the animal control officer will bring them in.
If the cats are in great shape advertise on Craigslist or Lakes Region Yard Sale of Facebook. You may find someone to take the cats. |
Cats for adoption
Take pictures of them and post them here or where you can. Male, female etc. Maybe someone will adopt them. Just don`t dump them off. Cruelest thing thing you could do!!! Sounds like they are house cats to me.
|
Do not post them free for adoption on Craig's list. This may only apply for kittens, bit if they are free on Craig's list snake owners take them and feed them to their snakes. When I heard this from a cat breeder it made me sick!

Here is an excerpt from the NH Humane Societies web site that lists the fees for surrendering the cats.
Surrendering Your Pet First and foremost you MUST make an appointment with a memeber of our Animal Care Staff Please call: 603-524-3252 x 305 or E-Mail: adoptions@nhhumane.org We do ask for a small fee when surrendering your pet. Cats and Kittens: From Contracting Town - $25 Additional information can be found here with some excellent advice:http://www.nhhumane.org/sr-surrender.php |
Great leads!
Thank you all for these great suggestions! I've got a few pics that I'll post here and on FB. That's terrible that people will feed free cats to snakes. I think I'll skip Craigslist for the time being.
The grandfather is a huge cat lover (obviously) and donated to just about every cat cause out there, so we're definitely going to make sure their future is a bright one. We've even thought about having a fundraiser event for a legit feral and homeless cat foundation instead of a memorial service when he leaves for the Great Beyond. I'll be sure to invite you all here. |
Feeding
A friend of mine that lives in Dracut Mass. told me the Cambodians in the Lowell Lawrence area consider black dogs and cats a delicacy. So don't give black animals away. Not sure if this is true but it is scary!
|
I can't imagine the black cats I know being very tasty. Or any cat for that matter. I have a hard enough time thinking about where the meat at the grocery store comes from.
|
Have you tried to contact any of the cat groups that he donated to and explained your situation to them??

Siamese Rescue League
If it is a Siamese or Balinese I can help you there.
$25 to drop a cat off? They quoted me $70 earlier. Must be the reason why they fired the last director...................... |

Collection of Experiences and Good Advice...
If you're thinking of adopting a cat, consider playmates for your new cat. Just yesterday, this entire discussion was posted about adopting cats (and kittens):
http://tinyurl.com/mp88sml I had no idea of the importance of littermates. From the article: Quote:

PetSmart may be a good lead however for a cat looking for a good home they ask around 100.00 (I think anyway.) No wonder the poor things never get taken what ever happened to HELPING the animal and keeping the price of all this very minimal? Sadly at that kind of money for an adoption most people will say the heck with it and spring for a new kitten, unfortunately leaving the other guys out in the cold...
