Belted Kingfisher? - Close up

A closeup of a very friendly visitor ( I believe it is a belted kingfisher ) to my deck on Wolfeboro Neck this past week.

Nice

Nice close up. Did it fly into the glass and get its bell rung? The whole front of our house is all glass and we have birds that try to take a short cut through the window.

Yes, birds run right into our sliding glass doors. I feel so bad, I put little plastic things on the glass and hope it helps them to see.

Good "Catch"...

Yes, it's a Belted Kingfisher. Interesting species, as they've demonstrated evolution of behavior. These are woodpeckers who transitioned to capturing fish. (Like the Asian bats that also catch fish.)

They're territorial among their own kin-birds, and very wary birds. Since they're hard to approach, closeups are scarce in bird books. It's likely a window strike, and he got his bell rung. Hope he flew off after recovering.

We had one visit us this summer. I had never seen one before and initially thought it was a kind of woodpecker (not too far off). It took a while to find it on my bird app. Great looking bird!

We have had one for years. This year we got a second one-we think maybe a baby but not sure.
