How is "Getting Here" Affected by a Pandemic?
For those of us who drive from distant points of the U.S.A. to arrive at the lake?
 |
At this point I don't think there is much difference.
Yes, traffic is lighter and you should take the precautions that many are now taking when in public places. Try to minimize contact with people and objects that have the possibility of being infected. But those things are true whether you are in your home area on the road. I went boating yesterday in Naples Florida and it seemed like a normal day. The usual amount of boats and people, and even tour boats were out on the water. Before I went I called a boat rental place with about 25 boats in their fleet just to find out what was going on. They told me it was business as usual and they were sold out for the day. I got the last parking space at the Naples public boat launch. I think the response to the virus varies depending upon the area of the country you are in so if you are travelling a long way you will see different levels of response along your route. |
In my NH neighborhood I have been seeing more families with kids.
We have very few year round kids here so I conclude that these are vacation home people whose kids are out of school and the parents are on work from home. It is nice to see some additional activity but I hope they didn't bring any hitch hiking CV bugs! |

We typically fly from LA, but are now being told not to fly, so driving might be a better option. With all the gas, motel, and food stops in the course of a drive that would take more than a week, however, I suspect the potential exposure while driving is no better, and perhaps worse, than flying. In the meantime, I am stuck in LA and my spouse is in NH as we try to decide on the best course of action, probably waiting this out until it resolves. Ugh!

We arrived back from FL last night. Drive was "normal", other than the fact that we made record time due to no traffic, being able to cruise at high speeds all the way (even through NYC!), and no restaurant stops.

Containing this virus is not predicated on hope- it requires perseverance/diligence! |
May be difficult...
The airlines are not sure of schedules and I just spoke to Concord Coach Lines...As far as I know, the only bus service from Boston's Logan to the Lakes Region.
Concord Coach Lines asked me when I would be travelling and strongly suggested I check just before my scheduled flight because they "were not sure they would be in business then". |

Getting Back? Not While Florida DOT Stops You...
A neighbor informs me Interstate traffic is backed-up five hours, encountering Florida checkpoint.
Sure enough: https://www-jacksonville-com.cdn.amp...a-georgia-line |
Everything our governor is doing in Florida is too little, too late. Yes, they are stopping cars on the Georgia/Florida line, specifically looking for cars from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut,. They are also stopping cars on the Louisiana/Florida border.
We have already had people returning from cruises who were infected and have since died. They have flown into our airports and came in contact with hundreds of other people. Our stay in place order is only starting today! We have waited way too long to do anything. Headlines in today’s paper have estimated in two weeks we will go from about 100 dead to almost 7000 dead in Florida. We have a very large senior population here, of which I am one. I add that, because I’m beginning to wonder if dementia is affecting what people are doing here. I am more than a little bit afraid. And I’ve been doing everything right for a month now. |

Did you hit the road? |
I fat fingered that “thanks” button...no offense.

Traffic backup?
I just did a google map view of the Georgia/Florida border and I see no backup. I saw the video from several days ago and there was one, but not now.

Note: that first booked flight was cancelled. Had to rebook. The airports were virtually empty. Most concessions closed. There were about 17 people on plane. No drinks. No water. No snacks. MHT was virtually empty upon arrival. |

(I once lived within walking distance of the Flora-Bama Lounge on Perdido Key.) |
My flying instructor is a Jet Blue pilot. He said he has not flown a plane in the last 10 days with more than 30 passengers on it. He also said that the employee and flight schedule changes daily with cancelled flights.
I understand that on the 150 passenger aircraft they are not putting more than 100 passengers on a flight to allow for "social distancing". It doesn't really matter anyway because so few people are showing up for the flights there is plenty of seating space. |

Bus service as with plane flights may change. |
LMFAO. And You are wondering how this Virus is still spreading. Pathic.
|
In LA we are wearing masks and gloves when we venture out to acquire essentials and I expect that I would do the same on mass transit (or car shuttle service) even as the curve flattens out.

He also has a third alias, kickinbassnh, on that same thread. Trolls need food to stay alive—just stop feeding him, he's clearly a sad, angry person. Sent from my SM-G950U using Winnipesaukee Forum mobile app |

Unsure why a writer should be banned at all. Everyone is welcome to their opinion. Just toss it aside if you don’t agree with it. We have all seen and heard what happens when you start filtering an individuals thoughts.

Without reasonably strong moderation most message boards deteriorate and wind up the lair of spam bots. Seen it happen to many boards. The moderator could do to lakeporter what he's done to me: make it so he must first review and approve any of my posts before they appear: easy-peasy. |

That is how it should be. Any of us that have been on the forum for a long time have seen people post who do not have the right attitude. Some people never post anything that is beneficial to the site and it's users or continuously post negative rants. I don't think any of us would enjoy seeing the site deteriorate into that. This is a great resource that we get for free. Over many years I have learned a lot about the lake and local businesses, restaurants, and marinas just from reading the posts on this site. We all benefit from the tireless efforts of the Moderator to set the tone on this site. There is much that we see, and also much that we do not see, and that is a good thing. I think he has done, and continues to do, an excellent job. |
It's pretty obvious that when a poster posts the same message under different names he is just trolling the site.
