Car Storage October thru May each year ?
 

A friend of the family has a convertible which she wishes to store each year somewhere in the Wolfboro or Alton area. She has asked us to help her find a safe, clean (no mice thank you) secure garage or barn storage to be used for her car every year.

Any idea what she will have to pay for such a place?

Does she need to keep her car Registered for insurance purposes, i.e. fire or theft during the time it is stored?

Anyone have any ideas where she can find such car storage facility?

There are self storage facilities throughout the region, usually safer than a random barn as far as fire, snow collapse, etc. Most insurance carriers will allow the owner to drop liability, Towing, rental and collision while in storage. If the registration lapses, you just reregister when you want to drive again. Same with inspection sticker.

Just west of Ellacoya Barn and Grille on rte 11 in Gilford is a "garage" storage area. Sorry, I don't have contact information for them.

Those are condo garages and all of them have been sold.

About insurance: Yes you can drop some of the coverage, like liability, but if there is financing on the car the bank may have certain minimum requirements for insurance while they have a lien on the car.

A year ago we bought a Miata from Seacoast Mazda. The manager lives in Alton Bay and his wife has a Miata. They winter it in one of the self storage units in Alton on Rt 11 just north of the bay. I don't know if there is still any availability.

My somewhat expensive solution was to buy an enclosed car hauler trailer and park it along side the garage for the winter. However, we also plan to trailer the Miata south in the fall so the trailer has dual use. We have heard about "The tail of the dragon":D

I had friends use a trailer for long term storage of a vehicle they did not want to part with. When they went to retrieve the car the humidity in the trailer had done a lot of damage.

If I were going to use a trailer for long term storage I would at a minimum get a dehumidifier and also be concerned about the temperatures inside the trailer..

I placed an advertisement in local newspaper seeking automobile storage.
Got a call. Private home.
Stored seasonal automobile for 5 years.

Be sure to obtain a quality car cover. Kimberly Clark (the diaper people) make the best car covers.

Be sure to mouse proof the car. Dryer fabric sheets do a fine job. Use lots of them. Even in the engine compartment. And exhaust pipe.

Stored a Triumph TR6 for winters betwee ‘76 & ‘80. On additional storage thought, lightly coat rubber gaskets (doors, hood, trunk, etc.) with Vaseline or similar product to keep them supple.

I've stored a couple of cars in self storage units. Agree with The Professor on mouse proofing, I also use Irish Spring soap, cut a bar into 3 pieces and put them around the car, especially the engine compartment and under dash.

I've never thought humidity was any issue, but I'm storing in the winter, not summer. I don't think it would be a summer issue in a storage unit, they "breathe" a bit as they are not all that weather proof. Disconnect the battery negative or take the battery with you unless you plan to stop in and charge it occasionally, my units didn't have access to power outlets so charging wasn't an option.
