No Changes—No Nuthin'!

When President Nixon took office, I watched as an island near Miami became his second home—and Key Biscayne then changed drastically. I had friends on Key Biscayne which at that time, was a sleepy community of modest one-story ranch homes, long public beachfronts, and wide-open spaces.

But today? :eek2:

"Key Biscayne is one of the wealthiest communities in the United States. The community, which is only accessed by boat and the Rickenbacker Causeway, served as the Florida home to former president, Richard Nixon and actor Andy Garcia...

The community of Key Biscayne is an affluent population by local and national standards...The median household income for Key Biscayne is $86,599...The property values of Key Biscayne reach a total of $2 billion and Key Biscayne ranked number 134 on Worth’s’ 250 Richest U.S towns in 2001.

In September of 2004, the town mayor restricted the use of wave runners and jet skis within 300 feet of the shoreline. The city also has begun the groundwork to implement new zoning codes that would prompt redevelopment and protect Key Biscayne’s “character.”

The island currently contains five public parks and about 30 acres of beach.

While the number of public parks is up, "wide open-spaces" for the public is down.

A land-rich Miami family donated a huge coconut plantation for the "open-air enjoyment" of every person: local "Movers and Shakers" fought that generous and philanthrophic donation in court, and now Key Biscayne has Professional Tennis Championships instead. :rolleye2:

I hope Romney sells his place before any radical change arrives at the Lakes Region.

Kamper 06-23-2011 07:52 AM

If only somebody would buy the place. Then there'd be no problem.

Slickcraft 06-23-2011 09:12 AM

If it becomes Lake MittWinni, the Marine Patrol budget will get a big bump up.

Fortunately for us Welch Island would be outside the security perimeter excepting a probable infrequent boat ride. With the "Beast" limo weighing an estimated 14,000 lbs, a special boat may have to be constructed to carry the functional equivalent around the lake in style.

Once in a while when I was a student...............

I missed a day of classes now and then. Remind me again, why would anyone want to be President? If it would be hard on us to have the traffic and security details, what must it be like to have to deal with all the problems of The United States? Then take off for a weekend and have to be surrounded and have roads closed because some nut out there thinks it would be great to take a gun and kill you????

"If drafted, I will not run; if nominated I will not accept; if elected, I will not serve." William Tecumseh Sherman.

Thank God for all who serve OUR WONDERFUL COUNTRY. Our Governement is not a perfect system, but I just don't know a better one. I will proudly put up with any inconvenience that any President causes, and I will be eternally grateful for being born in America.

Happy weekend to all and wish I could be there!! May try to get there earlier.

Dewey Wins!

I don't mean for this to be a political statement. I am just curious about what everyone's experience and imagination can come up with. BTW, you all have been very imaginative and I appreciate your contributions. Submarines? Excellent!

Greene's Basin Girl 06-28-2011 11:56 AM

Where exactly is Clark's Point when traveling by boat. I would like to find Romney's house when out on the lake. I looked on the Duncan chart and I can't seem to find it.

tis 06-28-2011 12:30 PM

From downtown Wolfeboro by boat, follow the shoreline on your left going by Brewster Academy, then Brewster (Sandy) Beach. Continue around the "corner". That outermost point is Clark's Pointe. It is a few houses beyond that.

I am not very good at explaining things but hope that helps. You really can't miss it though if you just continue along that shore.

jrc 06-28-2011 12:35 PM

As I understand it, the Romney house is on the east side of Springfield Point.

If you find Little Barn Door Island on the chart, due east of there is the Varney Islands, then Worcester Island then Springfield Point.

Wow I guess I'm at the wrong house.

tis 06-28-2011 12:40 PM

It would be across from Springfield Point.

When Mitt gets elected....no more skinny dipping!

Well, skinny dipping after dark would be out. Who knows how many SS divers' eyes would be peering up from the depths around the bay! :D

Much activity surrounding the premises would be monitored, I would think. More so a few weeks before he comes to town and during the visit. Plain clothes surveillance, video cameras strategically placed, etc. I'll lend the SS the motion-activated camera I gave hubby a few years ago -- it's still in the box!

I would imagine the poor people of Wolfeboro will see gridlock when he's on the move, but that would be about it. Dignitaries would not likely come to NH, but the White House or Camp David. Logistically a nightmare for all. They'll likely not draw any more attention to a visit as necessary, unless it involves good PR for the WH.

Merrymeeting 06-28-2011 02:29 PM

My in-laws live a short way outside of Kennebunkport. My recollection is that Bush's presence there was of minimal impact.

As others have mentioned, he rarely entertained dignitaries there.

If anything, some of the businesses complained that people stayed away because they assumed it was going to be crowded/crazy.

On occasion, there would be the random road closure, but not enough to worry about.

My biggest worry would be the after affect of all the publicity that our beloved small town would get.

lawn psycho 06-28-2011 08:39 PM

merrymeeting, the biggest factor that determines the impact to you is if you are on the actual route. To Walker's point there are lots of other paths you can choose to get around if you know the area.

In the case of the Lake, if you happen to be driving around the lake on a busy weekend day and a Presidential Motorcade is on the move, you may change your opinion:D It's certainly not the end of the world but you can be held up in traffic for a while if you hit the right place at the wrong time.

tis 06-29-2011 07:23 AM

WE had friends who lived very close to the Bush's house and when they were there and we went to visit, you could only go one direction. The road by their house was closed.

riverat 06-29-2011 07:35 AM

How much inconvienence would there be?
Vehicle searches(car and boats) and monitoring cellphone conversations? Checking adult diapers before boarding the mount? I have a feeling we will need to change the state motto.

From today's GSN:

MITT ROMNEY (shown here in the 2008 parade with wife Ann) was one of the first politicians to sign up for the 2011 July 4th Parade. Also participating will be First District Congressman Frank Guinta and the Wolfeboro Area Democrats.

Mitt is going to be in the parade in Wolfeboro Monday. Ron Paul is going to be in Wolfeboro tomorrow, at Evergrain around 2. Lots of politics this Fourth, I would say.

Merrymeeting 06-30-2011 10:00 PM

RG, for the clueless amoung us (who may only be me), can you enlighten us on who the woman is in the photo?

Rattlesnake Guy 06-30-2011 11:01 PM

Janet Napolitano is the third and current United States Secretary of Homeland Security.

Under her brilliant stewardship we now get photographed naked to get on a plane and our grand mother has her diaper searched. The references to the enhanced security to get on the Mount if Mitt was to become the prez gave me the very pleasant thought that perhaps we might get someone in the position that could stop terror without creating more of it in the process.

winnisummergal 07-01-2011 11:52 AM

The woman in the photo

I live in the state she governed for years and our economy is now one of the worst in the United States and our borders are awful. I'm not necessarily a fan of our current governor but I feel for her and the mess she is trying to clean up. I cannot believe this woman is in charge of Homeland Security when you look at the security of the state she previously governed....

Guys, please limit your comments to the impact this could have on the lake and surrounding communities. There are many other forums where you can express your political opinions.

More likely land in Boston and Marine One to Laconia.

If they use one of the 747's, Hanscom AFB not Boston Logan would be better for security purposes.

Manchester can take 'heavies' now but they'd probably use Pease because there is still an Air Force presence there, if they didn't use Hanscom.

tis 07-02-2011 07:50 AM

I would think they would use Pease too. It would be closest and it is a great runway and as you said, the AF still have a presence there. I wish Pease would get another commercial airline in there.

Air Force 1 is not always the widebody 747. It's whatever plane the president flies on.

When Bush I and Bush II were up for trips to Maine, the most common method was for them to fly the smaller plane into Sanford and then use motorcade to K-port. Sometimes, they would use the 747 into Pease but that was the exception, not the norm. Then they high-tailed it up the Maine Turnpike.

If Romney were to get elected President, there are a couple options they could do. They could fly to Pease and helicopter to Laconia then motorcade. They could do the same operation but instead fly to Sanford then Laconia via heli. Or the could use a plane direct to Laconia but I don't know enough about what planes they use and runway length to know what works and what doesn't.

Here's a picture of Air Force One at Sanford Maine I snagged from the web. You can clearly see it's not a 747....

Rattlesnake Guy 07-02-2011 10:37 PM

Marine One can land on three plywood disk on the White House lawn. I am sure they can find a spot near Brewster or the Golf Course. If I was over there, I would be proud to let Marine One land in my yard no matter who was aboard.

As long as I could post the pictures of course. :D

When I am in DC, I always stop to look up in pride of the power of the office of the President.

Heaven 07-02-2011 11:02 PM

Perhaps the huggin's pad? Or Wolfeboro neck at the Marriots "airport", or, there are other private pads in town.

tis 07-03-2011 07:32 AM

Romney is a friend of the Marriot's so maybe---. Never thought of that.

Romney in the Lakes Region for the 4th.

KBoater 07-03-2011 02:58 PM

Brewster Fields

Mitt will pay Brewster Academy $$$$$$$ to land Marine one on their fields
and no impact to traffic will happen except for the beach goers at Brewster Beach.
However roping off part of Winni will happen.
Just my solution.

True. Maybe they'll recondition an amphibian out of moth-balls and resurect the call-sign "Navy One."
