The Olde Family Homestead

Posted 12-31-2016 at 10:30 AM by Roy Sanborn

I grew up in Northern NH in a classic, white clapboard farmhouse that was built in 1799. It was said to be the second oldest house in our tiny little town of mostly modest year round homes, summer cottages, and grand old hotels. Our farmhouse had four rooms on the main level and four bedrooms upstairs. When we moved in there was an unfinished ell that was used for cold storage and a three story barn which obviously had held livestock at some point in the past. The house sat on a typical...

A Handyman Christmas Gift List from Lakes Region Home

‘Tis the season again and while most people may have other things on their minds there are a few holiday home shoppers still poking around under the tree for a new house for their families. My best advice to anyone trying to sell their home during the holiday season is to make sure it exudes a colorful festive spirit and décor…but don’t overdo it too much. Remember, buyers are trying to see your home and not the decorations....

Got a New Phone?

Posted 09-15-2016 at 02:32 PM by Roy Sanborn

Got a New Phone?

Every time you buy a new phone, even if it is just the newest version or upgrade of your current model, there seems to be a very large learning curve trying to get used to it. The manufacturers always seem to change something. You can’t seem to navigate it correctly, you drop calls because you pushed the wrong button, you can’t even seem to answer a call because you can’t find the right button, and God help you if you are on a call and you get another one beeping...

Gnomes Lives Matter

Posted 08-07-2016 at 06:51 PM by Roy Sanborn

Gnomes Lives Matter

Probably the number one question people ask me about when selling their home is “What should we do with respect to yard art and ornaments?” That question ranks higher than “What is my home worth?” and “should I take down the family photos?” and there’s good reason for it. The very first thing people see when coming to your home is your yard art. And it can make a positive or negative impression. But, some people think that they may have too much yard art...

The Disappearing Clothesline

Posted 05-08-2016 at 06:13 PM by Roy Sanborn

The Disappearing Clothesline

I was skimming through this month’s issue of the Northern New England Journey magazine put out by AAA and on the last page there was a short article about clotheslines called “For the Love of Laundry.” Basically, the writer was expounding on how she was happy to get back to hanging her laundry out on the line after a long winter and how doing so was a relaxing and enjoyable chore for her. It reminds her of her childhood days and trips to a cottage...

Smile of the Great Spirit

Posted 02-03-2016 at 11:02 AM by moneill
Updated 02-03-2016 at 11:05 AM by moneill (typo)

On the northern shore of the big lake, dwelt the chieftain of the woodlands, Ahanton. He was renowned for his courage, but even more so for the beauty of his daughter, Ellacoya. Many warriors pursued her. Yet all were rejected until one day, Kona, a young chief from a rival tribe to the south, appeared in the village. In response to the legend of Ellacoya’s beauty, he had traveled across the lake in his canoe to win her hand.

Leading an expedition to expel invaders, Chief Ahanton...

The much missed parlor.

The much missed parlor. The Lakes Region of NH Real Estate Market Report - Nov. 1, 2015

My first recollection of the parlor (or palour, if you like a French flair) was likely on the Beverly Hillbillies TV show.
Old Jeb moved from Bug Tussle to Beverly with Grannie, Jethro, and Ellie May to a 32-room, 14-bath, 21,523 square foot magnificent mansion...

Wow, 2014 is really here! Most people start the New Year with a fresh perspective. It’s a new beginning, so to speak, and a time to put the past behind you and move forward. New Year’s resolutions are made and sometimes that includes purchasing a new home which is good for all of us in the real estate business.
