WeirsCAM Frequently Asked Questions Where is the WeirsCAM located?
The WeirsCAM is located on the roof of the Winnipesaukee Pier at Weirs Beach, New Hampshire. The camera faces ENE out over the Lake toward the Ossipee Mountains. For more information see the "What you are seeing" page.
The camera is a NetCam Internet Camera enclosed in a weatherproof case. It is equipped with a wide-angle lens to widen the view.
Although the camera is a stand-alone server a PC (recycled Pentium 133, 32MB memory, 1.2GB HD, 56K modem, UPS) with a dedicated phone line is maintained to remotely access the network and run the Anchor Marine CAM. The camera is connected to the network via a 200 foot cable that provides communication and power. Bob Andrews of Anchor Marine has generously provided space in his office for the PC and use of his network. The WeirsCAM's PC is running Windows 98. The camera is controlled by an application called Capture Host that manages all camera and Internet functions. pcAnywhere is also installed to allow remote control of the PC and Capture Host software. How does the picture end up on the Internet? Every 10 minutes the camera's software snaps a picture, converts it to a common jpeg image file and uploads the it to the winnipesaukee.com Web server via FTP. The entire process only takes a few seconds. 10 minutes later the process repeats itself. Can the camera be turned or zoomed by remote control? No. The camera position is fixed and the lens does not zoom. Why is the picture sometimes more than 10 minutes old? Several things can prevent images from being uploaded to the Internet. The most likely reason is that the camera was unable to connect to the Internet for the last upload. The software will try 3 times and then wait for the next capture. If connection problems are encountered an image may not be transferred. Another reason could be that image uploads were suspended while system maintenance is being performed. We always do our best to keep the camera operational. If the image isn't current please try again another time. Why don't I see the most current image when I click reload/refresh? With some browsers you have to hold the Shift or Ctrl key down while clicking on Reload to load a fresh image. Otherwise the browser keeps loading the image in "cache". Why can't I see the remote window? The remote window uses JAVA. You should be using a recent version of Internet Explorer or other browser with JAVA enabled in your settings for the remote window to run. Older browsers that can't handle JAVA and WebTV can not use the remote window feature. Why does the WeirsCAM only capture images between certain hours? The start and stop times for processing images are set to roughly correspond with sunrise and sunset. Images captured after dark would show little more than black.
