Is it just me or did the channel markers at the beach end get set in closer together to make the entrance narrower
It seemed much tighter of an entrance

We traverse the channel every time we're out and I agree that they seem to be narrower this year. I also think that they are somewhat shifted away from the beach side as it sure seems like we are much closer to the rocks when entering the main part of the lake.

I agree, the rocks right past the monument seem much closer.

Is this something that should be brought to the attention of Marine Partrol, so they can get moved to their rightful spots? (Guessing pictures from a previous year might be useful in making the point.). Or maybe we can get a group of divers to help put them to rights.
Bizer tells me that it is not uncommon that markers and buoys move over the winter. Lots of them need fixing, as Bizer knows from having to re-do his maps. I wonder, can we readjust markers without MP? Bet not, but maybe with permission we can.

My guess is Marine Patrol has it set up the way they want it.

I think MP does make mistakes. Over the years, we have seen lots of buoys changed. Usually not a lot but some. It made us more cautious. I used to feel confident going close to the buoys but not so much now.

Contact the Marine Patrol!
Under no circumstances should you try to move any of the markers on the lake. It is illegal to "Move, displace, tamper with, damage, or destroy any navigational aid." It could also cause you be liable if anyone sustained damage to their vessel or was hurt as a result of changes made. |

The maintenance crew in the past used to remove bouys in the fall, repair, replace and repaint them every winter, and install them in the spring. Due to budget restraint, bouy maintenance is not a priority. When the ice moves and or damage the bouys, it remains where they are, unfortunately.
I noticed a number of bouys that have shifted and not in their proper place. You will need to be vigilant and pay attention out there. You should know by now that the MP officers are not boaters and they are seasonal employees. They will not have a clue what bouys have moved.

Given the variences in this thread, it seems anyone that notices a buoy that seems to be out of place should try to contact the MP and see what they say.
I wonder if you have to find the proper person? Is there a particular group or department that is in charge of the buoys? |
